Fotografica Doesburg

Regional Photographica Fair
Roel Fokken, photographer in Doesburg 't Gelderse, plans to organize a photographica fair in his Hanseatic city. In addition to the large international photographica fairs - then in De Flint in Amersfoort - of the Fotografica association, he also decided to organize a regional photographica fair elsewhere in the country.

In his own hometown, a suitable location was found in the Mosterdhoeve on Meipoortstraat. A cozy room in which enough tables could be set up to organize such a regional photographica fair for the first time in January of 1982. And with success, reason enough to repeat them in the following years. Among the photographica collectors, it was often referred to as the New Year's Fair.

This was last organized in the Mosterdhoeve in 2010, because the hall was given a different purpose. The move to the upstairs rooms of the beautiful building Stadsbierhuys De Waag was tried two years in a row, but was not a success. This New Year's Fair was last organized in 2012.

Museum
In 1985 a museum of photography was set up on the first floor of De Commanderije on Kerkstraat van Doesburg. It was Roel Fokken's own collection that could no longer be displayed at home and he felt that the collection should be shown to a wider public. The collection was displayed in beautiful display cases and even a real dark room was built and a complete interior of a photo shop from that historic time was also shown.

This museum was unique for the Netherlands and would have many visitors until mid-2001.

A different purpose to the building in question forced him to look for a new location. That was not easy, reason to store the collection packed elsewhere.

With the support of, among others, the municipality of Doesburg, the Prince Bernhard Fund, the foundation of Benevolence and the Hendrick de Keyser association, the beautiful historic building 't Huys Optenoort on Meipoortstraat in Doesburg could be moved into. On November 5, 2003, the mayor opened this new location; the Fotografica Museum Doesburg was once again a fact.

After more than six years, the decision had to be made in 2010 to close the museum. Reduction of subsidy and sponsor contributions, rising costs such as energy and insurance, but also it was more difficult to schedule attendants - read: volunteers - unfortunately the doors had to be closed. On the next tab, you can read what happened to the repackaged collection.

International Open Air Photographica Market
Roel had the idea to "bring" the Internationale Fotografica Markt in Bièvres, France, near Paris, to the Netherlands.

We write August 27, 1995 when an International Open Air Photographica Market is organized for the first time in the Netherlands, with 73 market stalls set up in the streets of the historic center. The beautiful weather - which we cannot organize - many visitors and enthusiastic exhibitors were reasons to repeat this open air market every year.

The penultimate Sunday of August was chosen to organize this market every year. It has now grown to more than 140 market stalls and has acquired a place in the agenda of the international photographica collector and interested party.
